The Indira Gandhi Stadium, located at the Indraprastha Estate in the eastern region of New Delhi, is the largest indoor sports stadium in India and the second largest in Asia. Built by the Government of India in 1982 in order to host the indoor games events in the Asiad Games, the arena's grounds cover an area of 102 acres.
Since its construction, the arena hosted a number of other tournaments as well. From the time Delhi Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium was constructed, it has undergone numerous renovations and restorations. The stadium has been divided two equal halves by a soundproof and fireproof synthetics wall to enables conduct of 2 sports competitions simultaneously
The facilities at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium of New Delhi include a fully air-conditioned main indoor arena with a seating capacity of 25,000 persons. In addition, the stadium is well equipped with intricate audio and lighting systems, making it adequate for colored television transmission. There is a soundproof hall, changing rooms, media rooms, VIP areas and medical rooms situated here for the convenience of the players
Various events like Cycling, Gymnastics and Wrestling are to be held in this stadium during 2010 Commonwealth Games. Other events like Netball are to be held in the air-conditioned Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
