Rugby sevens is a variant of rugby union in which only seven players per side feature, instead of the full 15. Rugby sevens is played under substantially the same rules and on a field of the same dimensions as the 15-player game. While a normal rugby union matches, lasts upwards of 80 minutes, a normal rugby sevens match lasts approximately 15 minutes but Final matches last somewhat more than 20 minutes. This allows rugby tournaments to be completed in a day or a weekend.
The version of rugby union is very popular, with notable competitions including the Rugby World Cup Sevens. Rugby sevens is also played at events such as the Commonwealth Games.
The lightning-paced men-only Rugby 7s, one of the core sports of the Commonwealth Games, was included since the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games, 1998. In 2010 Commonwealth Games, it will see fierce competition because the majority of the teams participating ranked among the world's best.
42 games are to be played, as teams will compete in four pools in a round-robin format. Performance within the pools will determine each team's progression through to the final rounds. All fights will centre around one gold medal on offer.
Delhi University Stadium will host the Rugby 7's matches in the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010.
